Benefits...Benefits...Benefits

Introduction:

How many of us really understand our benefits? What are we entitled to? What are employers required to provide?  What do I do if I'm not an employee?  So many questions...
Let me try to summarize some of the most pertinent topics that you need to understand pertaining to your health insurance coverage(i.e. health benefits).
1. Employers are required to contribute to a percentage of the cost of health insurance. Most do not pay all of it; a portion comes out of your check. Pay close attention to this so that you understand what their contribution is versus yours.

2. Employers are required to have a "minimum" in terms of the type of coverage they provide. You should always understand EXACTLY what you're getting from your coverage. Read through your coverage information and ask questions. Take a look to make sure that the "minimum" being provided aligns with what you and/or your family needs.

3. Take time to understand what happens with your coverage if you leave the job or are laid off/fired from the job. Some still offer COBRA but you really should understand it. In a lot of cases, the cost of the coverage would increase and you need to be prepared for that while you make a transition into another job or new venture.

4. Make sure you understand the difference between HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) and PPO (Preferred Provider Organization). Most people end up choosing between the two of them. There are more options as well such as POS, EPO and HDHP w/ HSA. I will not go into detail here, but make sure you understand which will work best for you and your family.

5. Make sure that you take a look at the company providing the coverage. Do some research and understand their reputation. In some cases you will not have a choice with your employer but at least you have some background on the company.

The final thing that I'd like to point out is that you always have the option of not taking the coverage that is put forth by the company. Yes you do lose their contribution but you gain the advantage of having full control of your health insurance benefits.
More than anything, just do your best to make sure you have some kind of coverage. Many have gone into major debt due to medical bills; and with the ever increasing costs it becomes critical.
